Mr Brendan Campbell was appointed Principal of Boronia West Primary School Term 4, 2006. He had previously been Principal at Hoddles Creek Primary School and Assistant Principal at Lysterfield Primary School.

Boronia West Primary School was established in 1963 and has undergone major renovations in 1999 bringing the classrooms, general purpose room and administration area up to an acceptable standard. The school grounds have benefited from Investing in Schools funding with funding for a new playground, shades and asphalting of the car park. The school was also successful in an application for funding for a 39,000 litre water tank. This will redirect normally wasted storm water to the toilets for flushing. The school boasts excellent grounds and playing fields with a 300 metre circular fitness track and fitness stations. A new and exciting development at Boronia West is the development of a strong partnership with GATEWAYS and the YMCA Leisure Works Swimming Pool(located across the road from the school) with a Gifted and Talented Swimming Program operating from the school facilities and practical sessions at the pool. GATEWAYS also conducts other programs from Boronia West Primary School such as Robotics and Maths.

The school has 212 students and has a 2009 Prep enrolment of 27 students. The school is fortunate in having specialists programs in performing Arts, Visual Arts and Health and Physical Education.

The school has built a reputation of being innovative and this is seen in Information and Computer Technology with fully integrated computer intranet and extranet and standalone computers in each classroom. Smartboards and Teamboards are also a new innovation in each class room.

The school has been a leader in the Innovation and Excellence Projects with projects such as engagement and retention of students Years 5-9. This began with a mathematically based project involving a domino drop and robotic programming, created cooperatively between schools around various states of Australia. The cluster’s Innovation & Excellence online collaborative mentoring program and its Australian Government Quality Teaching project were recognised in 2004 for their excellent initiative to continue, culminating in a successful whole school community water sustainability project named ‘SPLASH’. In 2007 Boronia West PS was involved in the ‘LANTERN film festival. This is an international competition where short films are produced by students and entered into a film competition judged in October. Many of our animations and short movies won awards. Congratulations to all involved.

2008 saw this school involved in another Cluster Project called 'Canamation'. This program involved schools devising constructions made of 'cans'. the theme was the Olympic Games. The culmination of the successful project saw the Education Minister visit and open proceedings. Boronia West's students won prizes for its enteries. Students gained many Math and Science skills which were reinforced by mentoring from 4th year engineering students from Monash University.

An outstanding feature of our school is the curriculum structure which provides individual programs for students and enables them to be challenged and supported in all levels from Prep to Year 6. We encourage and develop student's self esteem, responsibility, leadership and initiative and encourage students to take on significant responsibility for their own learning. There is a strong commitment from our staff to undertake professional development which allow us to provide excellent educational outcomes for our students. The school was accredited a Performance and Development School in 2008.

As a Principal I am proud to be associated with such a team of teachers, parents and students.

Brendan Campbell
