In Literacy, we explicitly teach Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening skills, and Spelling. During literacy sessions, students are involved in a mini-lesson at the start of the learning which clearly sets out what we’re learning and why, and how they will demonstrate success. Students work in groups and independently, and share their learning at the end of the lesson.
In Writing, students are taught to consider their ideas, sentence fluency, organisation, word choice, voice, conventions and presentation in their writing pieces. Our writing approach includes Writer's Workshop and Writer's Notebooks.
In Reading, students develop an understanding of how to select a Just Right book to enable them to learn from their reading experience. Students develop accuracy and comprehension skills through mini-lesson, independent work and conferencing with their teacher. They track their thinking as they read in a Reader’s Notebook whilst focusing on comprehension strategies, and thinking within, beyond and about the text.
